Our Purpose:
In the beginning... The vision for our garden was born in fall of 2009, when 5th grade teacher Joe Bailey first saw the garden space on the
grounds of the new (then under remodel) Queen Anne Elementary location. Although several years earlier the garden was lovingly planted and cared for by area neighbors, the school had sat empty for some time and, by 2009, it was overgrown, garbage-strewn and unkempt. Under Mr. Bailey's enthusiastic leadership, a group of QAE parents committed to turn the space into a living, breathing, edible and accessible respite for our new school. And the work began...
Today... Since then, students, parents, teachers and members of the Queen Anne community have come together to build a new garden. Within our small, original group of QAE parents, we formed a Garden Committee made up of parents and teachers. Our planting vision evolved to include both edible and native Northwest plants sections and, like all gardens, it remains a work in progress. We're excited to continue planting and growing
the garden with more plants and a better use of space. But we always keep in mind that our garden is so much more than just plants...
Moving forward... Our dream is to create a garden where people can observe, learn, create, eat, commune, meditate and play. We want a garden that's integrated into classrooms; where history, math, science, art, writing, reading, sociology and physical education are experienced as well as taught. We want our children to learn about cooking and nutrition, and understand the connection between dirt, sun, rain, and the food they eat. We want everyone in our school community to be comfortable moving in and through this magical place, and know that it belongs equally to each of us.
